Head coach John Harbaugh turned plenty of heads this week when he called Skattebo “a top-tier back” and said he expects him to play that way this season. Coming from the guy making the personnel decisions, that’s about as strong of a vote of confidence as you can ask for.
For fantasy football managers, I think this says a lot more than people realize.
Cam Skattebo Injury Update
The biggest question surrounding Skattebo this offseason has never been talent. It’s health.
After suffering a serious ankle injury that ended his rookie season, there was plenty of uncertainty about whether he’d be ready for training camp and if the Giants would bring in another back to compete for touches.
Instead, we’ve seen the opposite. And considering how menacing he was as a rookie, that should have fantasy football owners excited about his 2026 prospects.
Skattebo has steadily progressed through his rehab, returned to team work during offseason practices, and everything points toward him entering training camp as a full participant. More importantly, the Giants haven’t acted like a team searching for a new lead back.
They’ve acted like a team waiting for their lead back to get healthy. While it’s impossible to know how Skattebo’s surgically repaired leg will hold up this year, early signs are positive and Harbaugh’s comments suggest New York isn’t overly concerned.
Harbaugh’s Comments Speak Volumes
Every coach praises his own players during the offseason, but not every coach labels them “top tier.”
That’s what makes Harbaugh’s comments stand out. This feels less like offseason optimism and more like confirmation of how the Giants view their offense heading into 2026.
Skattebo isn’t competing for a role. Rather, he’s expected to lead the backfield. Naturally, that should catch the attention of fantasy managers.
Volume has always been king at running back, and Skattebo appears to be lined up for plenty of it. If his new coach is already beaming over his upside, it’s safe to say Skattebo enters 2026 with a considerable ceiling.
Fantasy Impact: Buy the Skattebo Hyperbole
I’m planting my flag here. I think Skattebo has a chance to be one of the best values in 2026 fantasy football drafts. It’s not that his ADP is weak, but Cam Skattebo’s 2026 fantasy outlook could have him cracking the top-10 if things break just right.
The injury is obviously part of the equation. You don’t completely ignore a player coming off a significant ankle injury, especially one whose game is built around lowering his shoulder and running through defenders.
That’s the risk.
His physical style invites contact, and history tells us those backs generally carry a little more injury volatility than runners who rely on speed and elusiveness. But I think the market is focusing too much on what happened last year instead of what’s happening now.
The Giants continue to show confidence in him. Harbaugh just publicly doubled down on that confidence.
And if Skattebo is healthy, there’s very little standing between him and a true workhorse role.
Those are the types of fantasy football running backs I want to draft. That isn’t to say there’s no risk involved, but Skattebo feels like a guy worth rolling the dice for.
