Chris Rodriguez wasn’t on many fantasy football radars when he signed with Jacksonville this offseason.
One big reason for that was the presence of former fourth-round draft pick Bayshal Tuten, but Rodriguez’s contract and some recent whispers suggest fantasy managers should take notice.
As training camp approaches, the buzz around Rodriguez continues to build. The Jaguars’ backfield is still sorting itself out, and one respected NFL insider believes the former Kentucky standout could end up playing a much bigger role than most people expect. It’s far from a guarantee, but it’s enough to make fantasy managers pay attention.
Buzz Growing Around Chris Rodriguez’s Role
Rodriguez has quietly become one of the more interesting names in Jacksonville’s backfield.
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, don’t be surprised if Rodriguez carves out an important role in Liam Coen’s offense this season. That’s noteworthy considering the Jaguars have several young backs competing for touches, but Rodriguez brings something a little different to the table.
He’s a physical, downhill runner who thrives between the tackles and has a history with Coen dating back to their time together at Kentucky.
That familiarity could help him earn the coaching staff’s trust early in camp.
Rodriguez probably isn’t going to lead this backfield in receptions or explosive plays. That’s not his game. But every offense needs someone who can grind out tough yards, move the chains, and finish drives near the goal line. If Jacksonville views him as that player, there’s a clear path to meaningful snaps.
With training camp still ahead, this remains one of the more intriguing position battles to monitor.
Chris Rodriguez Injury Update
Rodriguez’s offseason hit a speed bump after he underwent surgery on his left foot, forcing him to miss most of the Jaguars’ spring workouts.
The good news is the injury doesn’t appear to be lingering.
Everything points toward Rodriguez being ready when training camp opens, and Jacksonville expects him to be a full participant. Missing OTAs isn’t ideal, but if he’s healthy by camp, he’ll still have every opportunity to compete for regular touches.
For now, there doesn’t appear to be much reason for fantasy managers to downgrade him because of the foot injury.
2026 Fantasy Football Impact
Rodriguez is exactly the type of player I’ll be watching throughout training camp. He’s underrated in terms of quickness and vision, quite clearly.
He’s unlikely to become a three-down back, which limits his ceiling in full PPR leagues. But fantasy value isn’t always about playing every snap. If Rodriguez wins the early-down job and becomes Jacksonville’s preferred goal-line runner, he’ll have weekly touchdown upside.
His biggest competition comes from Bhayshul Tuten, who offers far more explosiveness, while LeQuint Allen figures to handle plenty of passing-down work. That likely points to a committee, but committees can still produce fantasy value when one player owns the high-value touches.
Right now, Rodriguez is more of a late-round dart throw than someone you should aggressively target. But if the positive reports continue once pads come on, don’t be surprised if his ADP starts climbing quickly. He’s one of the better under-the-radar backs to stash before the rest of your league catches on.
