WNBA DFS Picks – Core Plays for Thursday (8/28)

Basketball court

Thursday’s WNBA DFS slate is a walking disaster. All three games available to use have point spreads at 9 or higher, and we have some injuries to track.

Just when WNBA DFS was seeming plenty hard enough, am I right? That said, if Sabrina Ionescu (Q) doesn’t play, this slate opens up and gets a little clearer. And with every single game at risk of blowing out, we don’t need to be afraid to target anyone at DraftKings.

With that, I have three WNBA DFS picks I like above all the rest.

Alyssa Thomas, F, Phoenix Mercury ($13.3k)

Thomas is very expensive, but Napheesa Collier projects worse and is only $500 cheaper. Rostering one of these two ladies is very much suggested, as it starts to get ugly in a hurry after that.

But you don’t need a big sales pitch on Thomas. She has been a stud all year and is a triple-double waiting to happen. She’s accomplished the feat in back-to-back games, as well as three times over her last five contests.

The only issues regarding Alyssa Thomas are price and ownership, but I DGAF about either.

Jonquel Jones, F, New York Liberty ($10k)

Breanna Stewart only played 21 minutes in her return from injury, and that was in a close game. It stands to reason that she will continue to be held back a bit as she ramps up to full speed.

In addition, Sabrina Ionescu is questionable to play tonight.

If Ionescu is out, a good amount of the usage could trickle down to Jonquel Jones, who is looking way too cheap if that ends up being the case. The price is admittedly steep, but Jones is way cheaper than anyone else inside the top 5 projections for this slate.

Sami Whitomb, G, Phoenix Mercury ($5k)

If you want value on this slate, I think Whitcomb stands out as one of the better cheap plays. She’s coming in at a nice $5k price and is fresh off of a game where she logged 29 minutes and generated 35 fantasy points.

Her role has been up and down, but the value isn’t amazing tonight. She stands out, but I would definitely be looking to make a pivot in GPPs if her ownership gets out of control. Alysha Clark ($4.1k) is an even cheaper option that could make sense.

Keep in mind that Collier is projecting to be quite low-owned. She’s another pivot I’d look to in tourneys, if I wanted to get away from Thomas or pay up for both.

FanDuel WNBA Core

  • Thomas
  • Sabally
  • McBride

Thomas is the easy call over Collier on FD. I think one of them is totally viable, but pairing them isn’t an option. That 2nd piece is kind of wide open, but dollar for dollar, Sabally does look really good.

Do I love rostering two Mercury studs? Not really, but value is value. If you need to pivot, the options are endless and Jonquel Jones is there (albeit a bit more expensive).

McBride is a great value on FD. Collier being healthy again curbs her upside, but she feels like a core play. A solid pivot figures to be Sonia Citron, and I don’t mind using them together, either.
