Beware the ides of May. Apparently, “ides” was just an estimation of the midpoint of the month; there wasn’t really anything scientific about it. I originally assumed “ides” literally meant 15th, and thought it was weird they had a specific word for “15th” that wasn’t “15th.” Mystery solved.
